weDict iPhone Dictionary

weDict is a native iPhone dictionary available on Installer. The most recent version is at o.6.1 using http://app.weiphone.com/installer/ as the Installer source. This new version supports user selectable dictionaries to limit your results by pressing the “i” button in the top right hand corner. Various dictionaries are available from Installer or at the StarDict website. Manually downloaded dictionaries need to be extracted. Then rename the following *.dict.dz to *.dict.gz. Then extract again and upload via sftp the resulting *.dict and *.idx files to /private/var/root/Library/weDict folder on your iPhone. Limited speech pronunciation also works but with a hefty 200mb file size. Sound files can be downloaded here and uploaded via sftp also to the /private/var/root/Library/weDict folder on your iPhone. The weDict skin can be downloaded below, extract, and upload the images to your Applications/weDict folder.

i have a brand new iphone and i need to install an English Dictionary. Does the “wedict” come with the iPhone? Does the “wedict” need safari to use it? I do not plan to have the data plan on this phone. thank you!

12 kameron { 01.28.08 at 3:11 pm }

it’s a third party application which requires you to have a jailbroken iPhone.

13 cecilia { 01.28.08 at 3:15 pm }

kameron. thank you for the info. Do you guys know where I can get a decent dictionary/thesaurus for my iPhone? I googled but no luck yet. thanks again.

Make sure to press the i Button at the top right and it’ll flip to let you select what dictionaries to load.

I’m with @Nic. I can’t find the Applications/weDict directory.

When I look in my Applications directory, I see about 20 *.app files, eg, Books.app, Calculator.app. There’s even weDict.app. But there doesn’t appear to be an actual weDict directory (or in fact any other directory within Applications).

Could anyone please clarify. I really want to use this skin.

19 mank { 02.06.08 at 8:30 pm }

@Panic:

You can install an English dictionary from the Installer. On your iPhone, go to Installer > Install > Dictionaries and there’s lots. eg, Merriam-Webster, WordNet. Go nuts!

20 mank { 02.06.08 at 8:50 pm }

@Nic:

I get it now! Those *.app files aren’t files, they’re directories! *headsmack*

The path is Applications/weDict.app

Does it run on 1.1.2 OTB phones?

Hi is anyone can help with WeDict v. 0.6.1. I have installed weDict and then Oxford Dictionary. According to the instruction my Oxford Dic is in /private/var/root/Library/weDict/oxford_collocations.dict and /private/var/root/Library/weDict/oxford_collocations.idx. If it’s ok then why i cant activate the Dictionary by tapping ‘i’ in WeDict program? Its appearing disable. Please plase help me on it…………

27 Leonard { 02.22.08 at 1:02 am }

Hi folks!
I have a strange solution of the problem that i recently posted for Dictionary. When i saw a small ‘i’ in the WeDict i tapped it but it didnt work. I tapped it several time in many way to activate its options. But still it didnt work. The funny thing happened when i tap it very slightly on the exact point on ‘i’ the program roted and bring me the option to enable doctionary. If u have WeDict and a dictinoary installed just remember to tap the ‘i’ the way that i did, it will work just fine! Its a bit funny, dont u think? Cheers!

hi you all who complained about WeDict “crash” on launch.
i had also same issue, but i figured out that you need to install at least one of the dictionaries after installing WeDict. it just doesn’t launch being empty.
