Customization With Caterpillar * Win a 6 Month Subscription *

Caterpillar brings to the table some nifty little customization apps that make the iPhone more useful and enjoyable. Programs included in the bundle are Smart Dialer, µCalendar, Privacy, Reminder, System Font and Facelift. My personal favorites are µCalendar, which allows you to look at a cursory glance at the lock screen providing the current month’s calendar along with the events for the current day. System font is also another favorite which allows you to *duh* change the system font of your iPhone and lastly Smart Dialer, which in case you have a ton of contacts will let you search by name or number with the keypad and vibrates with each key press. The only thing I don’t like is the fact that Caterpillar is distributed on a subscription basis but if you find most of the apps useful, it could very well be worth it. Prices start out at $20.00 for 6 months, $35.00 for 12 months and $45.00 for an unlimited subscription. *The fine folks at Caterpillar have been gracious enough to donate five 6-month subscriptions to their applications. To win, just leave a comment on which application you’re most interested in and what they can incorporate to make it an even better feature. Five winners will be picked by March 3, 2008.*

The following winners are: Julio, Brett, Bryan, Rob and Angel. Your email addresses have been forwarded to Caterpillar to receive your 6 month subscription. Thanks to everyone who participated. I only wish I could give all of you a subscription.

i love the calandar on the slide screen, if they could also incorparate the weather for the day or maybe 3 day at the bottom of the screen i would have absolutely no need to enter my iphone, unless i wanna make a call or play games. now that would be awsome

sorry mods for posting on the wrong comments page

I really like the calendar/events on the suspend screen, that’s nice. My one concern about the pack is that fonts might not be compatible for some home brewed apps, and then what does that mean? Does it defer to the default font or crash?

Hello, sorry for my bad english!!!
my favorite is the Reminder App and the Calendar!
Caterpillar is the best complete App from the last Time!
I Love that all!
Bye Conny

I am interested in uCalendar and SmartDialer. I like the concept of displaying more information on the lock screen. Perhaps it could have even more things, and be somewhat like the dashboard screen on a mac. Maybe be allowed to place a few ‘widgets’ on the lock screen, and make it customizable. I would place the day’s calendar, maybe the next day too, along with weather. New possible additions could be recent texts, movie times, location, etc.

hello guys
i wanna tell you which part of this catterpillar i like the most and that is smart dialler ,, that helps to make calls more easy and get through contacts much faster ,,,
and my suggestion , add some skin for dialer , and facility to put snap for fast dial contacts and voice command for dialling contacts

thanks for your great program

6 Hameed Farah { 02.25.08 at 3:31 am }

Great little apps guys. You just made my day!

What I like the most is the “Dialer” and my suggestion is to make it smarter! meaneing when you just open the num pad there is a list of people you call the most (not favorites) but actually updated always based on how many times you called a certain contact. And if there is a missed call that name would be on top highlighted in red.

Micro Calender, can you add a small button on the lock screen that switches between the different views available or completely turns them off (all without unlocking the iPhone of course)

Reminder, this is a GREAT app and it is a must have on any phone! Not sure if this is already implemented but one needs to be able to change the alert sounds and vibration settings (interval/intensity/period etc.)

Hi,

uCalendar surely looks like a nice timesaver to me. Choosing a smaller font on the pending event list would be nice to have. Keep going :)

8 Amir { 02.25.08 at 4:59 am }

Caterpillar with all of its feature is awesome

i think Smart dialer , Reminder and SystemFont ( i think no other program did it before) is creative and great .

other friends suggested good things to improve caterpillar but i want some other things such as change Carrier logo , Signal bar and battery icons ( lock screen and Home screen ) for caterpillar.

i suggest somting else too :
i dont have caterpillar to test but i am sure the program consuming battery juice because it must running in background , please programing Next version of Caterpillar in a way that battery consumption reach minimum.

thank you for this amazing program and sorry for my bad english

Hey Guys great app always nice to see.
I like alot of the options Caterpillar has allowed but what i think would be great would be to have the ability to play around more with the new options caterpillar has allowed so for example it would be great to have a tabbed list of a custom selcetion say such as calendar, daily notes and mail notifier on the lock screen. But also the ability to switch between these tabs whilst still on the lock screen.

Hope that makes sence :)

thanks

I like the calendar app and reminder on the unlock screen, will come in handy. One thing I have really wanted is random wallpaper, basically I have a ton of wallpaper designs and I change them when I feel like it, but would be cool if everyday it changed the wallpaper randomly, I know it is silly but would give you a little bit of a surprise. Maybe incorporate it into the calendar so for St. Patrick’s day, I can make it pick a background I want. That could be a way of reminding also, ala a birthday cake for someone’s birthday.

11 Mac Happy { 02.25.08 at 8:23 am }

I also love seeing the appts for the day or few days on the front screen but another great module would be to indicate whether there is new mail and how many without having to unlock. To take it further and see if it’s from someone in your addressbook—even better!

12 Ryan { 02.25.08 at 8:27 am }

Like others, I like the previews of events and notes on the unlock screen. Besides that the reminder portion is pretty nice. The facelift portion isn’t really that important since most of use summerboard already but if they were to continue developing facelift to include the same features as summerboard and customize then I’d get it for sure. However, I don’t like the subscription service but it is nice that there’s an unlimited option. Too bad there isn’t a trial code so I can actually try the program before paying for it.

13 Peter { 02.25.08 at 9:48 am }

I would have to agree with the above post…previews are REALLY important to get a good handle on what can and can’t be done…Love the concept tho!!!

14 Josh { 02.25.08 at 10:26 am }

I think if the notes list could somehow be integrated into the lock screen that would be great for us who need to access things we have jotted down quickly

15 Dave { 02.25.08 at 10:54 am }

The calendar on the front page is the best addition to the phone. I am sure there are many people like me that never open up the Cal to see what is coming up in the days ahead.

16 Daniel { 02.25.08 at 10:57 am }

Hi, i’m from Belize a country in central america. I really like the Calendar app and the smartdialer, they are both used heavily everyday, and more themese for the dailer would be great…

I want to be one of those fortunate users to test and have those apps on my iPhone…

Keep up the great work…

cheers!

17 Rob { 02.25.08 at 11:30 am }

Hello there. I just read about this nifty app today. As a music teacher/professional musician/gospel choir director, my days can get very busy very quickly. Trying to juggle rehearsal times, concert dates, piano lessons can be cumbersome and extremely tedious. I would really appreciate using the calendar/to-do list application of this software to the fullest. As one person mentioned, having the calendar show up as soon as you turn on your phone would be an incredible timesaver for me! And to also have the option of having a to-do list appear would be priceless! I’ve had 2 full concerts this past weekend and I had to keep checking my to-do list and constantly go though my contacts to call my choir members to make sure they were to be on time. To alleviate some of the time to access the info I need with this program would be absolutely beneficial in my future engagements. I commend the developers of this great application.

18 DZV { 02.25.08 at 12:46 pm }

So far, the “System Font” is my favorite and DejaVu with it!

The function I would like to see, even if it might not be exactly what Caterpillar is about, is a way to hide things and password protect areas on the phone. Like make the iPhone to demand a password when you tries to read the SMS, or look at the call history, pictures, movies, music etc…. You get the point.
And maybe a way to hide clip, pics, tones, program etc… To not make people suspicious.

19 James { 02.25.08 at 5:44 pm }

Odd that no one seems to be touching on the monstrous fee they’re charging to “borrow” an iPod/iPhone app from them.

I’m fully prepared to pay $6 for a small app, or game here and there and heck, I think I’d even fork over $15 for a CandyBar like app from Panic to theme my iPod/iPhone but a recurring subscription based “rental” app… or a hefty $45 price tag?

No thanks, I’m taking my ball and going home on that one.

20 Gabe { 02.25.08 at 7:23 pm }

I will definitely love using the calendar app because it puts all of my events right infront of my whenever i turn my iPod on! something apple should have definitely though of, but im impressed to see it implemented so well here.

As far as improvements, google calendar integration would be unbelievable. The one thing keeping me from using the iPod calendar as my main scheduler is that most of the time I have easier access to google calendar. A way to sync the two would be amazing!

21 Will { 02.25.08 at 8:57 pm }

Nobody wants to “subscribe” to an application at a fee well above that of which Apple will be charging to keep apps forever. Your application isn’t great enough to warrant the price, alternatives are already being made and others already exist. It also might be a deal for someone who wants all of these features but few do, the ability to pick and choose would be intelligent. Probably the best suggestion yet, without it I can only foresee that the makers of Caterpillar will fall behind others in providing these features.

22 ryan { 02.26.08 at 1:29 am }

lovin the calendar screen, a to-do list screen would be sooooo awesome

23 Meet { 02.26.08 at 2:00 am }

Just saw this page and i feel that CAlendar screen and smart dialer absolutely rock. Both these apps are definately on my most wanted list of apps.

Also if ul could comeup with a software which would allow blacklisting phone numbers and sms’s from specific number it would be realy great

24 m4w { 02.26.08 at 4:41 am }

the subscription model has priced these apps out of my range. i think 45$ (lifetime subscription) is way too much money for the calendar on home screen feature.

25 Sarah { 02.26.08 at 5:47 am }

I just saved enough money to buy the iphone (selling two ipod videos… had to convince the hubby somehow). I would love these apps and think the development is outstanding. I am a huge fan of supporting developers especially in the Mac world and try to pay for well developed apps when I can or when they are in my price range. I am not sure I like the subscription idea as I would prefer a more reasonable “purchase” price. I guess they want to get people hooked and renew subscriptions. As far a my fave app included with Caterpiller, I love the unlock screen calender as I am really bad at checking my calender and sometimes am in a babysitting bind because of a meeting I forgot to check. This app would really help me. I would not like the unlock screen to be too busy, so maybe they could make a choice of what you wanted on the unlock screen. I also like the idea of changing fonts as I am a typography freak but just curious as to how compatible fonts are universally on the iphone. If I were able to try this out, I would probably get so used to using it, I would just have to buy the lifetime subscription.

26 Nicolas { 02.26.08 at 5:59 am }

The smartdialer is really needed when you have many contacts (I sync them using Windows Address Book) but it would be even better if it could search from inside the words (e.g. typing ‘lipe’ would both find filipe and philipe).

The biggest thing I would like to see is a calendar week view (ideally 7 days but 5 would already be great), probably using the horizontal view. This would help see a working week in one view. I hope Caterpillar will be able to add this feature!
Nicolas

27 Angel { 02.26.08 at 10:51 am }

Oooooh. I’m a sucker for freebies, Kameron. Hahaha. I would love love love to get my hands on uCalendar (Calendar Screen). And more so, Privacy!!! It’s just so hard when that text message pop out starts to bother your phone’s borrower. Eek.

Oh and a quick note, I hope these devs will also start working on Shapeshifter and Silk for Leopard. :( Ever since the upgrade to the new OS, their old versions stopped working :)

28 Lyle, RN { 02.26.08 at 3:39 pm }

I like the calendar and system font feature. A good addition would be the ability to use animated wallpapers (SWF or GIF).

29 Tarek Mansour { 02.26.08 at 6:03 pm }

I like the smart dialer, this was what I miss on my iPhone because i was winmobile user.. what I would like to have is unlimited subscriptions :)

30 sol { 02.26.08 at 6:50 pm }

This looks great. I wonder how well the “haptic” aspect of the dialpad works and if so perhaps it could be expanded to the rest of the keyboard (like that proof of concept floating around the internets today).
Suggested Feature: change the “recent calls” screen it’s just terrible in terms of providing call information and could be significantly improved on.

31 Anurag { 02.27.08 at 7:38 am }

I liked the Privacy feature. It would be nice to add block caller list, which can block both SMS and Calls from a particular number.

32 Essa { 02.27.08 at 11:37 am }

I think a really nice feature would be to incorporate the Taskbar Notification Icons for new emails, missed calls, new SMS messages, or new events in the calendar. This would be nice so it could show you without having to “slide to unlock” no matter what was set to show up on the locked screen or if the privacy setting were set to high.

33 Bestcomp { 02.27.08 at 1:53 pm }

Well I am actually just interested in the privacy feature, since there seems to be no other app that allows to hide the sms popup window.

34 Shawn { 02.27.08 at 2:06 pm }

I like the calendar alert feature. I’d like it better if it wasn’t on the screen all the time and instead somehow would alert you to events you have placed in your calendar by popping up an alert on the screen or in the status bar…Thanks!

35 mikelite { 02.28.08 at 12:01 pm }

I like the calendar on the unlock screen. One thing I would add would be the ability to see more than just one month at a time. maybe 3 months, like iCal. That would be to make it better. to make it more appealing, I’d seriously reconsider the subscription model.

36 Danny { 03.01.08 at 10:24 am }

I am most interested in the Reminder application. The ability to view your calendar and events that are displayed on the lock screen. A great addition could be the option to display the calendar for more than one moth. It would be nice if other information could display on your lock screen as well, such as email, the timer or stopwatch (if they are in use), or possibly RSS feeds. Also, if you could view your notes on the lock screen it would be very helpful. It would be even better if you could choose which note that you want to appear.

37 m00h { 03.01.08 at 3:27 pm }

The Calendar von the Unlock screen rocks, very good idea. I think it would be very good to chose the color to for those with diferent wallpapers.
And lower the price, 45 $ is way to much even if the $ is falling.

38 RealZac { 03.02.08 at 7:47 am }

µCalendar and Reminder are the 2 thing that I’m interested in most.
Hope that there is a configuration option that makes the events view the default view on the locked screen, not the month view.

Zac.

39 andrey { 03.03.08 at 10:25 am }

No. 1 - agenda/calendar on lock screen
Would be nice Birthday reminder…

40 andy { 03.03.08 at 10:33 am }

ToDo list on lock screen (not calendar)

41 andrey { 03.03.08 at 10:35 am }

Agenda on lock screen - the best for me.
Birthday reminder - is a dream.

42 vandy1997 { 03.03.08 at 12:42 pm }

i like the Calendar the most. There sould be an option to show a daily view instead of the monthly view. It would also be nice to go to a specific day by tapping it on the monthly view and to use a left to right or right to left swipe to go forward and backward in time both in the daily and monthly view. Then you can see not only what you need to do today, but you can also review your schedule for another day.

43 Celmz { 03.03.08 at 1:03 pm }

Calendar on a desktop is the best!!!!

44 Angel { 03.04.08 at 1:37 am }

Oh, I won! It was a little strange to get the activation code via e-mail without buying it. Then I remembered this nifty contest. :D

Thanks Unsanity and Kameron. :D

45 kameron { 03.04.08 at 2:47 am }

@Angel
I hope you like it. I personally find it to be very useful. The smart dialer works wonderfully along with the calendar app. I’m hoping they come up with some worthwhile updates as I would definitely pony up the dough for an unlimited license.

46 Angel { 03.04.08 at 9:50 am }

I’ve hadn’t much time to tinker a lot with its features. But I am sure loving that calendar on my lock screen. Love it!

PS. And even if your site is on my feed list, and even if you include all the pictures there, I find myself still coming over because the simplicity of your layout makes it so much better to browse. Well done, Kameron!

47 Rob { 03.04.08 at 12:37 pm }

Hello again. I was incredibly shocked to find out that you chose me as one of the recipients for the 6 month subscription to Caterpillar. I’m at work right now (planning period) and I was just checking my email to see what concerts/rehearsals I had scheduled for this and next month. I am very thankful to you, Kameron, for giving me a chance to use this app. If need be, I’ll give a review on it.

I’m so happy that I stumbled upon your website a month ago! It is now on my fav list and I check it on a daily basis for new apps I can put on my iPhone. I would’ve never known about Scrabble for the iPhone if it wasn’t for your site! Again, I thank you kindly! My 3rd grade class just came into my classroom so I will bid you adieu until next time.

48 kameron { 03.04.08 at 12:40 pm }

@Rob
You’re welcome. I only wish I could give everybody a license that entered. Let us know how you like it and what improvements you’d like to see.

49 m00h { 03.07.08 at 4:58 am }

thats it not everyone can win ;)

congrats and happy trying to those who won!

50 yoyo { 03.07.08 at 5:10 pm }

Hey
You guys have any ideas where i can get this beautiful japanese girl picture from?

thx

@yoyo
I made those to match the Louie Mantia Sticker Theme. Look under weather backgrounds in search.
