Official 1.1.3 Dev Team Jailbreak Released - Back Again To 1.1.2
I decided to give this official 1.1.3 Dev Team jailbreak a try and i’m finding myself going back to 1.1.2 again like I did after the first published 1.1.3 jailbreak. Initial jailbreak went smoothly and the only problem I encountered from the stock applications was the Maps “locate” feature not working. The Maps “locate” feature did work after installation of the third party application LocateMe was installed but upon reboot, stopped functioning again. Installing applications from Installer proved to be frustrating as they would download but upon installing, would just send me back to the springboard with no evidence of the application. The same futile results were obtained trying to manually install applications via sftp. If you’d like to try your luck with this jailbreak, head on over to HackthatPhone for well written instructions.

1.1.3 Jailbreak - And Why I Went Back To 1.1.2
Being on the bleeding edge sometimes just isn’t worth it and this 1.1.3 jailbreak is a perfect example. Yes, I was well aware that some third party applications would stop working but to have stock Apple applications like Maps not work is unacceptable. I’ve perused all the forums and it seems i’m not alone in this mess. For me, jiggly icons will have to wait. If you haven’t jailbroken yet but are still planning on it, one of the better guides i’ve seen is at iClarified for Mac and Windows. Let me know in the comments section how your jailbreak went.

1.1.3 Firmware Changes - A Deeper Look
We’re all familiar by now of changes that the 1.1.3 firmware has brought with regards to applications, enhancements, etc… but Nate True delves deeper into the inner workings of the 1.1.3 firmware and he found some interesting things.
From Nate True:
- SpringBoard no longer needs to be modified (via SummerBoard) in order to show extra applications in the /Applications folder.
- All applications now run as the user ‘mobile’ instead of as root.
- Preferences are now stored in /var/mobile rather than in /var/root.What does this all mean? I’ll tell you what it means.
The iPhone 1.1.3 firmware is ready for official installable applications.
Even though there are no applications available for purchase (besides the iPod Touch’s $20 “upgrade package”), the installation architecture appears to be there already.
It also appears that the frameworks have undergone many changes, ostensibly to make it easier for official SDK developers to make programs. It does, however, break many of the existing applications including most of mine (Lights Off still works though :D).
Additionally, the SpringBoard app appears to have widget support - it contains a class called SBWidgetApplication which manages the package location and icon.
I will update this post with more details as I find them, so keep checking back.

1.1.3 Firmware Jailbreak - No Hardware Modifications Needed
After following this link on Hackint0sh regarding the recent development of the 1.1.3 jailbreak, it seems there has been progress made on making the 1.1.3 jailbreak easier for the masses. According to nervegas, author of NES.app, they’ve been able to cut the procedure of jailbreaking 1.1.3 down from a two-hour deal to about a half-hour now for savvy users and without need for hardware modifications but won’t be released prior to the iPhone’s SDK debut in late February.
